What's happening in St. Kitts and Nevis? Quite a lot...

In my last post I told you that quite a lot was hapenning in St. Kitts and Nevis. It seems like almost everyday, there is news about discussions or plans to develop new resorts, golf courses or villa developments. Some existing properties are also in the mix as some have plans to expand.

Poker tourney, horse racing and entertainment park and Frigate Bay

I realize that I have not added any new posts to my blog for some time now, and I apologize for not keeping you updated on what's happening here in St. Kitts and Nevis. Quite a bit has been happening, so much that it's been quite a task to keep up with working on my website, forum and blog, while keeping a full time job. Anyway things have slowed down a bit for me so hopefully I'll be able to post here more often.

So, to get the ball rolling, here's what I have for you today (not everything is hot off the press, but I believe it's worth sharing with you.

If you love casinos and gambling, then you will be happy to know that from November 26th to December 3rd, 2005, the Royal Beach Casino at the St Kitts Marriott Resort will be hosting the 2005 Caribbean Poker Classic Tournament. More information available here.

Horse and dog racing will be coming to St. Kitts in the near future. That's right, the US$17 million Beaumont Park Race Track that is presently under construction in the Whitegate area of Dieppe Bay, St. Kitts will feature thoroughbred horse racing and greyhound racing . Beaumont Park's vision is for St. Kitts to have the premier horse and greyhound racing track in the Caribbean. The Beaumont Heights real estate residential development overlooks the Beaumont Park Race Track. More information available here.

Finally, the lands around the Salt Pond at South Frigate Bay are being developed into a community entertainment park. There will be space for space for picnicking, kite flying and separate jogging, pedal biking and walking trails. There is also discussion about developing the pond for recreational fishing, kayaking and canoeing. Read more about this exciting development here.

Music Festival, Horse Racing and Central Forest Reserve?

The 2005 St. Kitts Music Festival is fast approaching and as usual, there are lots of press releases and news items to tell you more about the festival. Here is the link to a new page with some information about the St. Kitts Music Festival.

Did you know that after decades of absense, horse racing will return to St Kitts in September? Read here for more information.

Sunset/Moonlight Lime

The Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park will be hosting a Sunset/moonlight lime at Brimstone Hill on Saturday Saturday 26 March, 2005, from 6:00pm-11:00pm. Music will be provided by the Havana Rhythms Band and DJ Ronnie Rascal. Admission is only $5.00. BBQ Fish/Ribs/Chicken served with Seasoned Rice/Ital/with Garlic Bread & Corn on the Cob will be on sale. It promises to be lots of fun. There will be a well stocked bar, and youi can enjoy a game of dominoes or draughts (checkers).

New Look and Feel for Website

I am in the process of changing the look and feel of my site. Please bear with me as I make the changes. I have quite a bit of pages to changeover so they may take me a few weeks since I can only do a few pages per day.

Bird watching in St Kitts

These past two Sundays, I've been on two bird watching trips with a small group of persons from the St. Christopher Heritage Society and Ryan, an experienced bird watching enthusiast from Canada. We were able to see and identify quite a number of birds on thes trips. I will be posting information on the birds that we saw as well as some pictures I took of the areas where we went to look at these birds. I didn't get any pictures of the birds though. They just don't stay one place long enough for you to find them in the viewfinder and focus the shot. I'll probably need to get one of those pairs of binoculars with a digital camera.

KIM COLLINS TO COMPETE IN 60M DASH IN BIRMINGHAM

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 7TH 2005 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ sprint king, Kim Collins, is to compete in the 60m dash at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham, England on 18th February.

BBC Sports said Monday that the Kittitian star joins British Olympic relay gold medallists Jason Gardener and Mark Lewis-Francis.

Sydney Olympic 100m champion and world indoor record holder Maurice Greene and Athens Olympic 100m silver medallist Francis Obikwelu will also take part.

Collins, the World and Commonwealth 100m champion and who ran in Birmingham at the 2003 World Indoor Championships said he was “looking forward to competing against such a strong field.”

“I got a great reception from the crowd at the NIA when I won my 60m world indoor silver medal in 2003 and it will be really exciting to return to this venue,” BBC Sports quotes Collins as saying.

The world champion says he's in good shape but he isn't underestimating the home competition.

“Jason Gardener and Mark Lewis-Francis are Olympic gold medallists now and I'm sure they'll be aiming to win in front of their home supporters. I'm looking forward to competing against Britain's best sprinters and I'm sure the 60 metres will be one of the most exciting races of the evening,” said Collins, who was sixth in the Olympic final in Athens, Greece, but is hoping for a better result at the World Championships in Finland this summer.

“This will be a big year for me and I plan to defend my 100m world title in Helsinki in August. Before then I want to perform well over 60m indoors and start my year in winning form.”
